Introduction One of the most famous books of early Australian writing is The Letters of Rachel Henning published in 1951-2 by the Bulletin magazine and subsequently republished in book form. Within those publications the available letters were heavily edited. Rachel Henning ,(1826-1914) arrived in Australia from England in 1854, and her letters cover the period 1853-1882. The following is some material from the Illawarra Historical Society Bulletin which refers to Rachel Henning's writings and her period of residence in the Illawarra region of coastal New South Wales.
